Stanley Hudson Day

Ashley Naftule July 20, 2018

Ah, Fridays. That blessed day before the weekends when we all pretend to work at our jobs. If you’re looking for something to read to help you run out the clock, feel free to look at some of these recent pieces by yours truly:

Ellipsis

Here’s a piece of flash fiction I wrote that was inspired by a Roky Erickson song and by some local cryptozoology:

Two Alone In The Dark

Hard Drive

For no good reason, the fine folks at Hard Drive amassed a gigantic list of Waluigi nicknames. Yours truly submitted a handful (my personal fav: “Smegma Man X”).

More Waluigi Than You Can Handle (THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID)

Phoenix New Times

On the music writing front: here’s an essay I wrote for NT about dynamic noise duo The Body.

The Body Make Music That Takes You Out of Yours

Medium

A trio of FilmBar pieces on

  • Jason X
  • Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
  • Killer of Sheep

Under The Radar

Two new film reviews by yours truly on UTR:

  • El Sur
  • Manila in the Claws of Light

Shiny And Oh So Bright

Ashley Naftule July 13, 2018

Yesterday I saw the opening night of The Smashing Pumpkins’ Shiny and Oh So Bright Tour (aka “All Old Stuff, We Promise: The Tour”). I covered the concert for Phoenix New Times. Check out my review:

And if you’re looking to get an extra dose of Pumpkins writing by yours truly, I also wrote an essay for New Times about Billy Corgan & his penchant for talking about shapeshifters:

  • Upstream by Monica Bauer
  • The Cellist by Ilana Lydia

Put The Boots to Him, Medium Style

Ashley Naftule July 6, 2018

In other news: I’ve been blogging a bit on Medium lately. I started using Medium as a kind of orphanage for neglected pieces: commissioned articles that never made it to print/online, and pieces that I had to rescue with the Wayback Machine because the originals entered the Valley of Dead Links.

Here’s a few of the pieces that have gone up there. Give ’em a read if you’re looking for some “quality content,” as the kids would say. And if you dig ’em, please click on the clap icon (for those new to Medium: claps equal $ for the author).

Some Medium cool pieces:

  • “I’d Rather Be A Dead Cat”: On Curiosity
  • “Last Train To Brechtville”: Looking Back On “Head”
  • “They Have To Say This Or They Wouldn’t Survive:” A Conversation with Cold Cave’s Wesley Eisold
  • Forget The Joshua Tree: Achtung Baby Is The U2 Album We Need Right Now
  • “Visual Drone”: Slowing Down with Tarkovsky & Tati

A Fine Young Chap from Ghost City Press

Ashley Naftule July 5, 2018

The fine folks at Ghost City Press released a micro-chapbook by yours truly last week! It’s called Epoch & Olivetti Sing All The Hits. All the pieces in the chap started out as “poetry on demand” pieces I wrote on typewriters at live events for The Zelda Fitzgeralds and Phoenix’s Poetry On The Spot.

GCP offers their micro chaps as Pay What You Want (and yes, zero/nada is an option). Any banana skins and greenbacks you shell out end up going straight to moi, so donations are MUCH appreciated.

You can get your copy of “Epoch & Olivetti” HERE.
