On Thursday, August 20th The Trunk Space had their 5th Annual H.P. Lovecraft Birthday Party show (which I have the honor and privilege of organizing, hosting and writing the birthday zine for it). It’s always a nutty, chaotic, glorious affair: past shows have seen us summon the ghosts of H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard to haunt the stage, bring San Francisco’s The Slow Poisoner to Phoenix to woo us with his one-man swamp rock extravaganza and at one show The Arcana Collective crucified an octopus onstage! A real octopus (dead… I think… I hope).
This year had it’s fair share of strangeness: there were poems about Donald Trump and comparing Sarah Palin to The Goat With A Thousand Young; the messy, bloody birth of H.P. Lovecraft himself was recreated onstage; the entire audience did “Dark Yoga” with host Crafty The Cosmic Horror Clown; videos got shown depicting secret Illumanti meetings (as well as a music video for the song “Cthulthu Is My Fetish”); and horrifying prizes were handed out to the winners of our Mythos Trivia Contest (prizes included a Cthulthu piggybank, Lord Dunsany paperbacks and a nightmarish doll-headed sphinx sculpture).
On hand to document the festivities was the Phoenix New Times. Benjamin Leatherman took all the photos you see here. To see more from Thursday’s show, check out the New Times’ slideshow.
